Dalla fine del XIX secolo fino alla sua morte nel 1917, lo scultore francese Auguste Rodin fu probabilmente l’artista più famoso nel mondo occidentale.

Celebrato in numerose esposizioni in Europa, ottenne il favore dei governanti, degli aristocratici, dei politici, degli uomini d’affari e delle celebrità, da Buenos Aires a Praga.

La sua personale notorietà lo rese oggetto di ammirazione ed emulazione, e per decenni esercitò una profonda influenza nell’arte americana, grazie soprattutto all’interessamento di mecenati come Sarah Hallowell e Isabella Stewart Gardner. Pubblicato in occasione di una grande mostra al

Cantor Arts Center dell’Università di Stanford, questo importante studio dedicato all’influenza di Rodin in America annovera sculture e acquarelli di grande qualità, molto ammirati dai giovani artisti americani.

Ma l’attenzione del volume è anche rivolta al lavoro di scultori americani, come Malvina Hoffman e Lorado Taft, e di artisti che lavorano sulle due dimensioni, come il fotografo Edward Steichen e la pittrice Georgia O’Keeffe, che offrono un chiaro esempio dell’influenza di Rodin e delle successive tendenze artistiche che ne decretarono il superamento.

In quasi 400 pagine, Rodin in America offre dunque un’accurata disamina di un aspetto poco conosciuto dell’arte americana, e dà risalto al prezioso contributo di Rodin come scultore.

By 1900 the controversial sculptor Auguste Rodin had become the most famous artist in the western world.

Celebrated in endless exhibitions throughout Europe, he enjoyed the patronage of governments, aristocrats, businessmen, politicians, and celebrities from Buenos Aires to Prague. Substantial collections accumulated in the United States primarily through the efforts of admirers such as Sarah Hallowell, Kate Simpson, and the avant-garde dancer Loïe Fuller. His notoriety made him a focus of adulation and emulation, but it was the expressive surfaces, overt sensuality, evocative partial figures, and sense of movement that he achieved in marble and bronze that dazzled a generation of artists.

“Rodin and America” is the first sustained effort to evaluate what American sculptors, painters, and photographers learned from his bold stylistic innovations. The authors analyze how his accomplishments shaped the evolution of American modernism both through his positive impact and through the reaction against his influence as more radical modernist styles emerged. The artists studied include sculptors such as George Grey Barnard, Malvina Hoffman, Lorado Taft, and John Storrs; Morgan Russell, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth and other advanced painters; and such revered photographers as Lee Miller, Man Ray, and most notably Edward Steichen.
