Summary
Is Tolkien’s work Christian or pagan? Readers and critics alike have pondered this simple question since 1954 (publication year of Lord of the Rings), and this is no small matter given that it touches the “theological” essence of the Oxford professor’s work. The first part of this article examines the two theses applied antithetically in interpreting Tolkien’s Legendarium in relation both to its explicitly Christian elements and to the essentially pagan culture which stands out in sharp contrast with the contents of Revelation. The central part of the article argues instead for a synthetic approach whereby Tolkien’s work is understood as pagan (because situated within a natural context both in terms of religion and theology), while at the same time it is viewed in profound harmony with Revelation. Paradoxically, it is precisely on account of its peculiar paganism that the legendarium expresses a culture that is fundamentally Catholic.
