Sommario – L’Autore tratta dei viaggi missionari di san Francesco e del suo incontro con il sultano, più volte attestato nella letteratura e nell’arte. Compara le fonti francescane con le notizie che provengono dal di fuori dell’Ordine. Le prime sottolineano il motivo nel desiderio del martirio, sviluppato specialmente da Bonaventura;soltanto in Bonaventura, Francesco si offre di passare attraverso il fuocoper la fede cristiana. Per le altre fonti il motivo è differente: Francesco voleva convertireil sultano e soprattutto stabilire la pace fra cristiani e musulmani. Basandosisugli scritti del Santo, specialmente sul capitolo 16 della Regula non bullata,l’Autore sostiene che lo scopo era la testimonianza evangelica in sottomissionea tutti e la riconciliazione. La missione francescana è quindi missione di pace.

Summary – The Author treats the missionary journeys of St. Francis and his encounterwith the Sultan that is attested to multiple times in literature and art. Hecompares the Franciscan sources with the information garnished from sourcesoutside the Order. The former highlight the desire for martyrdom, developed especiallyby Bonaventure, as the reason for the journeys; only in Bonaventure’swritings does Francis offer to pass through the fi re for the Christian faith. In thelatter sources Francis’ motivation is different: he wanted to convert the Sultan and,most of all, secure peace between Christians and Muslims. Based on the Saint’swritings, especially chapter XVI of the Regula non bullata, the Author argues thatFrancis’ aim was to witness to the Gospel in submission to everyone and to offerreconciliation. Franciscan mission, therefore, is a mission of peace.
