Summary
The hiddenness of God is a complex phenomenon that is difficult to define. It is a rich metaphor for the being and activity of God who reveals Himself and at the same time makes His absence felt. Taking as a point of departure the affirmation at Is 45:15, additional Old Testament texts in which one can see the verbal roots that refer to God’s hiddenness are examined. From these texts it can be deduced that, in addition to the classical prophetic understanding of God’s hiddenness as a consequence of sin and disobedience, whether by single individuals or by the entire people, this hiddenness situates biblical man before the mystery of Deus revelatus in absconditate, in which hiddenness is understood not only as an indication of an absence invoking a presence, a lack awaiting its fulfillment, but as an active darkening, as the presence of God within His perceived absence.
